Grizzlies 93, Trail Blazers 90

The Memphis Grizzlies' big victory was dampened by an even bigger loss.Guard Damon Stoudamire ruptured his right patellar tendon and left the court on a stretcher in the Memphis Grizzlies' 93-90 win over the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday night.

``We just lost a big, big part of the heart of this team by losing Damon,'' said coach Mike Fratello.

The 32-year-old Stoudamire will undergo surgery pending an examination by team doctors in Memphis and will likely miss the rest of the season, said team spokeswoman Stacey Mitch.

Mike Miller scored 15 of his 23 points in the second quarter for the Grizzlies, who led by as many as 15 points in the second half before Portland rallied, getting within two in the final seconds.

The Grizzlies hung on down the stretch, with Eddie Jones hitting two key free throws, but the sudden loss of their starting point guard reverberated in the locker room after game.

``It's really painful for the team to lose Damon,'' said Pau Gasol, who had 18 points and nine rebounds. ``He's been a great leader for us and we'll miss his great finishes down the stretch.''

Stoudamire, who was originally said to have sprained his knee, ruptured the tendon while driving to the hoop in the second quarter.

``I had a layup, but when I went up it felt like a sniper shot me,'' he said. ``It was just a feeling I've never had.''

Stoudamire, who played more than seven seasons for the Blazers, was making his first appearance in his hometown after leaving to sign a four-year deal with Memphis in the offseason.

He lay motionless with his head buried in his arm for a few minutes until being wheeled off the court.

``What's crazy is that when I went from the court to the Blazer locker room, I cried. And I cried upstairs,'' Stoudamire said.

Ruben Patterson scored 22 points and Zach Randolph added 18 points and nine rebounds for the Blazers.

Miller finished 8-for-10 from the field after hitting his first six shots. He scored 18 points in the first half and stayed in the game despite suffering a sprained ankle just before halftime.

The Blazers missed the inside presence of Joel Przybilla, who sat out for a second straight game with a sore knee.

``They have a really nice team with inside presence by Pau Gasol and outside presence by Miller, Jones, (Shane) Battier and Stoudamire,'' said Portland coach Nate McMillan.

Portland got within 90-88 on Patterson's rebound put-back with 18.9 seconds left.

Jones then increased the lead to four with two free throws before Juan Dixon made a layup to get Portland within 92-90.

Bobby Jackson hit one of two free throws with 10 seconds left and the Blazers missed a chance to force overtime when Randolph missed a 3 at the buzzer.

Stoudamire's injury also shook up some of his former Blazer teammates. While paramedics attended to the guard, Patterson repeatedly tried to leave the Portland huddle to see him, but assistant Maurice Lucas held him back.

``To see the guy go down here brought tears to my eyes, man,'' Patterson said. ``He came out here and I told him I love you and keep your head up.''

Notes: Memphis is 6-14 all-time playing in Portland. ... The Blazers were also without G Sebastian Telfair and F Darius Miles. ... Gasol had 26 points and 12 rebounds for the Grizzlies in an 89-79 win over Portland in Memphis on Dec. 21.

Lakers-Grizzlies

Lakers 94, Grizzlies 79

The Los Angeles Lakers' traveling show has been getting good reviews recently.

Kobe Bryant scored 27 points and the Lakers completed a successful, six-game trek with a 94-79 victory Wednesday night over the Memphis Grizzlies.

The victory gave the Lakers a 5-1 record on the trip and snapped a five-game losing streak in Memphis. The trip was the most successful for the Lakers since a 6-0 road stint in 2000. Los Angeles is now 8-5 this season on the road, compared to 4-5 at home.

``Well, I'm just disappointed we didn't go 6-0 to be honest with you. We let one get away there,'' Laker coach Phil Jackson said, laughing about the lone loss at Minnesota. ``No, we've been really fortunate with the way guys have been playing, especially on this trip.''

The Grizzlies dropped their third straight, their longest skid of the season.

Bryant, who also had eight rebounds, connected on 10 of 17 shots from the field and missed only two of 11 attempts in the second and third periods. Los Angeles' 73-52 lead after three allowed Bryant to rest in the fourth quarter and watch the Lakers' reserves maintain the advantage.

``Our defense is what we hang our hat on,'' Bryant said. ``We did a great job. We got pressure on their outside shots. When the ball went inside, we did a good job of digging it out and contesting their layups.''

Lamar Odom scored 14 for Los Angeles, and Smush Parker finished with 13.

Mike Miller led Memphis with 21 points, while rookie Hakim Warrick matched his season high with 11. Antonio Burks finished with a career-high 11 points and leading scorer Pau Gasol added 10, most coming in the fourth when the game was no longer in doubt. Gasol grabbed 12 rebounds.

If Bryant's performance wasn't enough, the Lakers dominated inside, outrebounding the Grizzlies 48-38 and outscoring Memphis in the paint 48-32.

``This hasn't been a fluke,'' Bryant said. ``This isn't a one-game type of thing. We've been moving the ball consistently, and it hasn't just been this game. It's been the whole (road trip).''

The Lakers used 14 first-half points from Bryant to build a 45-37 lead at the break. With Shane Battier, Memphis' leading defender, out with an injury, the Grizzlies relied primarily on Eddie Jones to guard the NBA's second-leading scorer.

Bryant went 5-of-11 from the field as the Lakers shot 44 percent and led by as many as 10.

Los Angeles extended the lead at the start of the second half. Bryant hit his first four shots - part of an 8-of-11 burst for the Lakers - to build the advantage to 63-47. Los Angeles led by 23 in the period.

``He's going to keep shooting the ball until he gets his rhythm,'' Jones said of Bryant. ``I think he got his rhythm going in that third quarter, and what can you do? You can't do much of nothing.''

For Memphis, it was the second double-digit loss, raising questions about what has changed from the previous week where the Grizzlies were on a six-game winning streak. Stoudamire said he didn't think it was an energy problem.

``We need to find our trust factor again in one another,'' the point guard said. ``It seems like on the floor right now, we don't have that trust factor. I think we're out of rhythm.

Notes: Battier was not in uniform because of a jammed right index finger injured in Monday's practice. He had started all previous 20 games this season. His status is day-to-day. Miller started in his place. ... With Battier and G Bobby Jackson (right hamstring) injured, the Grizzlies dressed F Brian Cardinal, who had sat out the season thus far recovering from knee surgery. He played nine minutes and scored three points. ... Bryant has led the Lakers in scoring in all but four games this season. ...All of the Lakers scored, including rookie Andrew Bynum, the youngest player to ever play in the NBA. Bynum had a point in the final 2:38.

Hornets-Grizzlies

Grizzlies 89, Hornets 73

Opponents are starting to respect the Memphis Grizzlies' defense.

Pau Gasol scored 29 points and grabbed 15 rebounds Tuesday night as the Grizzlies beat the New Orleans Hornets 89-73 for their sixth straight victory.

The Grizzlies, already leading the league in defense, have allowed opponents an average of 76 points during their winning streak, and have won all but one by double-digit margins.

Like other teams, New Orleans struggled from the field, shooting 39 percent - a problem Hornets coach Byron Scott had warned his team about before the game.

``I told them if you've got a good shot, take it because if you drive inside or take one dribble that shot is gone,'' Scott said.

Gasol shot 7-of-13 from the field and also hit 15-of-19 free throws, tying a personal mark for most made and matching a franchise record for most attempts. He added three blocks.

``We tried to take New Orleans out of their trend,'' Gasol said. ``We stopped the point guards pretty well with our guards moving their feet and the big guys committing on all the pick-and-rolls they run. I think we did a good job keeping them off the lane and not letting them play their offense the way they wanted to.''

Reserve guard Bobby Jackson scored a season-high 21 points, and Eddie Jones added 11 for Memphis, which held a 21-point lead in the second half.

By the early stages of the fourth period, the Hornets' starters left the game for good and watched from the bench as the reserves finished New Orleans' second straight loss.

``That's our bread and butter,'' Jackson said of the defense. ``When I first got here in training camp, I was like 'Man, we're working on a lot of defense,' and we weren't working enough on offense.

``I see why we are working on defense because (coach Mike Fratello) wanted us to be one of the best teams in the league, and we're there.''

P.J. Brown, leading scorer Chris Paul and reserve guard Speedy Claxton missed a combined 22 of 26 shots.

``I think they did a good job of keeping me and Speedy out of the lane, which is where we can be effective,'' Paul said. ``They did a good job of shutting that down.''

Desmond Mason and David West led New Orleans with 15 points apiece, while J.R. Smith and Kirk Snyder each scored 10.

Memphis, which struggled early from the field, eventually got on track thanks to Jackson, building an 11-point lead in the second period and taking a 50-39 lead at the break as Lorenzen Wright hit an 10-footer at the horn.

Jackson, the winner of the NBA's 2002-03 Sixth Man Award and runner-up the previous season, said creating instant offense is just one of the keys to his game.

``I've always had to the same approach. I know I can go in there and change the game offensively and defensively,'' Jackson said.

New Orleans chose not to double-team Gasol down low in the first half, and the Memphis leading scorer had 17 points and eight rebounds. Mason scored 13 to lead the Hornets in the first half, and Smith added all 10 of his points.

``(Scott) felt like we should go one-on-one with me first,'' Brown said. ``But at halftime, he didn't think the energy was there, so he wanted us to pick up the tempo by doubling down on him. It just seemed like when we did that someone else hurt us.''

Brown was only 1-of-6 for two points. Meanwhile, Paul, who entered the game with a 16.9 average to lead all rookies, missed all three of his shots in the first half, and was held scoreless until a layup with less than a minute left in the third period for his only points of the game.

By that time, Memphis had built the lead to 21 and carried a 70-53 advantage into the final period.

Notes: Memphis has defeated opponents by an average of 17.3 points during the six-game winning streak. ... The Hornets' Chris Andersen got into a bit of an exchange with a front-row fan, who suggested the center cut his long blond hair. Andersen glared at the fan long enough that the spectator said little more. ... Paul had scored in double figures in 15 of the Hornets' first 16 games. ... The six-game winning streak matches the longest undefeated run for Memphis from last season.
